Djukun language revival is more than 120 years in the making
— Jaala Ozies

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Djukun Nation's ambitious project to revitalise our language. With the goal of reviving 50 fundamental words, this initiative marks a significant step in the preservation and celebration of our cultural heritage. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the collaboration with the Research Unit for Indigenous Language at the University of Melbourne and linguists expert in the Nyulyulan languages of the Kimberley region. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Duncan Leary Trust for Australian Indigenous Languages for their generous support, and to the Djukun Elders and Djukun community members whose dedication and self-funding brought this vision to life, with further assistance from the Kimberley Language Resource Centre. Together, we have reclaimed a precious part of our identity, setting a profound example of cultural resilience and unity.
