Mary Ozies, a Djukun woman of unwavering determination and resilience, sat comfortably in the studio of ABC Radio, ready to share her remarkable journey with the world. The host Vanessa Mills, with a warm smile, introduced Mary as a mental health advocate, mother, educator, and a person whose life was a tapestry of diverse experiences.

As the interview began, Mary spoke eloquently about her upbringing as one of nine siblings. Growing up in a bustling household filled with laughter and kindness, she learned the values of compassion and perseverance from a young age. However, her childhood was not without challenges. Mary shared candidly about the racism she faced in her early years and throughout adolescence, those taunts felt like stones thrown directly at her. 

Mary reflected, on those experiences and felt it shaped her journey through life. 

The conversation shifted to her time backpacking around Australia, a journey that opened her eyes to the vastness and beauty of this great land Australia. 

The host delved into Mary's experience at boarding school, where she felt the pressures of isolation away from her family. "It was lonely," Mary admitted, it wasn't an easy time in her life. 

Despite the challenges, Mary excelled in her studies. She spoke proudly of her tertiary education achievements, each degree a testament to her dedication and hard work. "Education," Mary emphasized, was an important part of shaping her future. 

When asked about her work in mental health, Mary's eyes lit up with passion. Mary explained. "I want to help others through their struggles."

As the interview drew to a close, Vanessa asked Mary if she had any advice for young people. Without hesitation, Mary's words of wisdom earned through her life experiences. 

She stated "Get yourself a great education."
